The problem is that I've seen several people make statements like that
in all seriousness (though they were slightly less drastic). And so
I really had no reason to believe yours was different. How could I have
recognized that it was a joke without even a smilie to tip me off?

I'm not certain about the guy who wrote the Sashimi fic, but I've had some
encounters with the author of KnI, and the only bad thing I can say about
him is that he tends to enjoy upsetting people way too much.
