The picture of a much aged Sasami is very intriguing considering storyline
implications. There is some degree of consensus that at the end of the TV
storyline Ryoko won- Tenchi was hers. The Sasami image indicates things
quite a few years in the future. So will Tenchi and Ryoko be established
lovers in this movie? Hell, could Ryoko even be pregnant? Somehow I
doubt such sophisticated thoughts entered into the minds of the people who
wrote this movie- TMiL was the anime equivalent of Hollywood cheese (I
experienced much the same feelings from watching TMiL as the last half hour
of "Saving Private Ryan") and I just don't expect any sophistication in
its self-announced successor. I also can't imagine them abandoning the
formulaic dispute between Aeka and Ryoko - it's just too much originality
to hope for. At the very least a TV based movie set in the future would
have Ryoko living on earth for a number of years and the rest of the girls
all having gone home (this is how the TV series ended). But maybe they
just completely ignore this timeline consistency stuff and do something
totally unpredictable and completely nonsensical. But what I really
expect is 1) if the movie is consistent with anything, it will be
consistent with TMiL. 2) An aged Sasami makes me expect some weird
hodgepodge of the various Tenchi storylines.

Now if they did have a TV based movie where they really did abandon the
Ryoko and Aeka thing and Tenchi and Ryoko already were lovers in every
sense of the word (note: my feelings toward Sasami in this regard pertain
only to the OAV series) then perhaps they just might make something
original and worth watching. At least an aged Sasami suggests she might
be something more than the kawaiiness relief she was in TMiL.
