It's a rather formal japanese word for "girl". In this case it refers
to anime and manga that specifically target girls. They usually contain
rather overblown romances and there's also a particular drawing style.
The most well-known example is Sailor Moon (especially the manga).
Others are: everything by CLAMP (X 1999, RG Veda, Tokyo Babylon),
La Rose der Versailles, Wedding Peach and Marmelade Boy.
