The -dono suffix is an archaic form, initially used between samurai
beholden to different lords. The -sama suffix would be inappropriate in
such situations as it has a variety of connotations of fealty that would
just not apply to the samurai under different lords.

A rough translation is "I may be your better, but I respect you and the
power you wield". Which pretty much fits Washyuu's usage as well as idiom.
