Hardly a "new" trend at all. The concept of a strong female lead started
becomming popular in Japan several decades ago, following on the heals
of the "women's liberation" movement in the United States. But that
doesn't answer "why", does it.
Why is a complex, highly sociological issue. Consider every reason you
have for finding a strong female lead compelling. Now consider every
reason your sister has. That should give you something of an idea as to
why.
