That's kinda what I thought (and I phrased it that way in the
Animerica review). Several years ago, I was in France for a
comics convention, and saw an episode of a magical girl show
from Japan on the TV in the hotel room. Unfortunately, I
either missed the credits or couldn't relate them to anything,
and I got kind of curious ("What IS this?!"). I ran across Fred Patten
later that day at the con and asked him what show I had seen.
Fred is pretty knowledgeable: he's one of the founding fathers of
anime fandom in the States and now a honcho at Streamline.
However, Fred couldn't tell me what show I had seen. No matter
how detailed I got in my description of it, there were a zillion
shows just like it, and no one detail in particular popped out
that would pin it down to something specific. Maybe some French
anime fan could have helped here, but even the French title in the
newspaper listings didn't tell Fred anything. Then too, there is
so _much_ anime out there that nobody's seen all of it, and even
the experts might not be able to identify this or that show if it
falls outside their particular area of interest.
