I was re-viewing episode 1, side 2, where Diva first encounters
Jinai. When she asks him if he is the "True messenger of god", seemingly a
set phrase from El-Hazard lore or prophecy, the Nihongo she uses is "makoto
kami no...". It seems quite a coincidence, and one that being a language
native can't answer, because it is the sort of blindsiding used routinely by
storytellers, fortunetellers, and "prophets".
"Makoto" is the formal form of "honto", "true". So, is Diva really
talking about the "true messenger of god", "Makoto, the messenger of god",
or "the god Makoto, messenger". Of course, the casual listener hears "true
messenger of god".
Near the end of episode 5, Ifurita is reflectively asking "Makoto,
what the hell are you?". I'll lay my bets on one point, the casual "true
messenger of god" understanding is wrong, and Makoto ends up on top. I'll
El-Hazard a guess that he is actually a god. B-)
