My first anime con, not my first con. A superior fan con with very
good dealer support, much more friendly and economical than a promoted con.
I was shocked, as an isolated fan, by how little TM there was, and how much
SM.(There were pleanty of Japanese CDs, my budget would only afford one,
B-(, ) More about that later.
If the guy that was posting about the Ryo-ohki plush toy is still
around; I was disappointed by the ones the dealers had. The best one, which
was fairly good, was grey, and the ears were too short.(I overheard a number
of others muttering the same questions) They were not identified as
"Ryo-ohki". Are these unlicensed? They are expensive not to be right, and it
is so easy to be disappointed, especially sight unseen.
Pioneer was represented with a pre-screening of HyperDolls. Good
characterizations, but absolutely silly villian threats.(all be it, very
humorous) I think I will regret pre-ordering.
There was a SM-S Movie screening, really quite good. It confirmed my
worst suspicion of DIC dub and editing. The SM panel were quite sure that
what DIC does is absolutely necessary for North American broadcast. If this
is so, we can be quite happy with what Pioneer is doing, and pray that they
never decide to broadcast TM TV here.(I do hate the way I keep ending up
arguing the purist viewpoint, I don't really believe it) I think what
happens to SM, and the nastyness on RAA, supports my recent slander of my
own culture with regard to sexuality and body. (I don't care if I'm not a
girl, SM is unquestionably both cute, and intelligent compared with, say,
HyperDolls)
