:Eugene-san,
Wow, I haven't been called this in 4-5 years. ^^;;;
:this is a bit off topic but I'm going to have to network
:some Macs (which are used for graphics work) to an NT server (and some
:clients) at the office sometime soon...I'm not familiar with Macs at
:all...my question is, what is this flattened graphics thingy? What
:exactly is being "flattened"?
Quick response: in the Mac world, files may have 1-2 "parts" (or
"forks"). One is the data fork; this is generally the file
contents as expected on most platforms. The other is the
resource fork, there to store "meta" information about the file
to the rest of the OS (kind of like MIME on steroids); it can
store simple information like file type/creator, icon data,
fonts used, etc.
Anyways, QT files often have their content stored in both the
data and resource forks. So when moving to a non-Macintosh
environment, it is often necessary to combine the necessary
content of the resource fork into the data fork. Thus, a file
is "flattened", and ready for consumption for the non-Mac
platforms of the world.
And this probably explains the problem with the QT files in the
Tenchi screen saver application from Software Sculptors: the
programmers forgot.
:Would it cause problems if the Mac guys
:shared graphic files with NT apps?
Dependent on the file type and application behavior. Doubtful,
as the relevant information is stored in the data fork, and
that's the only part needed.
:If this explanation is too long
:please email me privately, ne? Those Mac guys do some QT work...don't
:ask me what...but we'll need to do some collaborative work
:sometime...^^;;
Need a consultant? ^^;
