#WHAT IS TENCHI MUYO?

Q: What is Tenchi Muyo?

A:
Tenchi Muyo is the story of a boy named Tenchi Masaki, and all of the
events that happen around and to him. Originally it started as a composite
of the best attributes of some of the various Animes, but soon took on a
life of it's own.

It spans many different genres. It has a complex Science Fiction plot, a
nice romantic comedy element (A classic Guy surrounded by Girls match), a
bit of A fantasy element, especially in the first episode, and many times,
a sit-com-ish
look at life.

Q: What formats is Tenchi in, how are they Different? What is the OAV
Series, What is the TV series?

A:
Currently there are 2 OAV series for Tenchi Muyo (with rumors of a third)
and 1 TV series (with a new series starting in two months) and one Movie
(Tenchi Muyo in Love), with two more movies in development. In addition,
there is also a Manga (or Comic book) that was done in Japan, and is
distributed in America under the title: "No need for Tenchi". Likewise
there is a new Comic book, being done in America under the title of "Tenchi
Muyo".

Originally Tenchi Muyo was a concept pitched to Pioneer. Pioneer contracted
AIC, a Anime production studio to do 6 OAV's. A OAV is a animation that is
released strait to video, and is not shown on TV or in a Movie. Later,
Pioneer did 7 more OAV's.

The Tenchi OAV's are much more complex then the TV series. The initial
story revolves around introducing the Characters. The first series in
general establishes the love Triangle of Tenchi, Aeka, and Ryouko. The
villain in the first series is Kagato, by a unofficial survey on
Rec.Arts.Anime.Misc, is the best villain ever.

There is also a second OAV series, but the second series, in the eyes of
many fans, does not live up to the first series. There are 13 OAV episodes
currently.

The Tenchi TV series has the same characters as the OAV's, but the plot is
dumbed down, to reach a younger age demographic. There are 26 TV episodes
currently, with more episodes in development. The storyline is completely
different.

The Tenchi Movie, Tenchi Muyo in Love, is based on the TV series, but tends
to be fairly story line independent. There are two more movies in
development.

There are also some novels that have not been brought over.

Q: What does the name: Tenchi Muyo mean?
A:

The title is a bit of a pun, having many different meanings, due to the
complexity of the Japanese language.

Meaning #1: No need for Tenchi or Useless Tenchi.

This is what it normally is translated too. Viz's Graphical novels are
known as "No need for Tenchi". This translation comes from separating the
words Tenchi & Muyo, where Muyo means useless or no need for.

The title reflects Tenchi's role in the series. Things tend to happen
around him, and he tends to react to those events.

Meaning #2: This side up.
Which sort of emphasizes Tenchi tying to get back to a normal life, after
he freed Ryouko. This is from taking the words: tenchi muyo and putting
them together in one word (tenchimuyo).

Meaning #3: Heaven and Earth.
Yet another meaning.

Q: Was the meaning of "Tenchi Muyo" as "This end up" intentional?
A: [Ken Arromdee]

The 101 Secrets states that it was unintentional, but this is apparently a
joke. Bill MacPhee of AIC asked the creators, posting the answer in a
thread titled "Tenchi Muyo! Title tanslation/joke"; they were aware of the
meaning and it was intentional.

#CHARACTERS

Q: Who are the Characters?
A:

Tenchi Masaki:

Our hero. Combine Ryouga's nosebleeds, Ranma's martial arts skill and
Kyosuke's indecisiveness, and you have Tenchi. Tenchi is a nurturing type
of fellow, who cares for all of those around him. He is a bit timid at
first, but grows less timid and much stronger as the series progresses.

In the OAV series, he is "killed" (see debate on wither or not Tenchi was
killed) in OAV 5, He is rescued by Tsunami, and is rebuilt. He faces Kagato
again, and defeats Kagato by Generating Light Hawk Wings.

Ryouko:

A space pirate. Ryouko is in love with Tenchi and would do anything for
him. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a lot of experience when it comes to
matters of the heart, any many times will let her emotion and lusts get
away from her.

In the OAV series, Ryouko is an artificially created life form, created by
Washu. Originally Ryouko was under Kagato's control, where she pillaged
many star systems, and attacked Jurai, Aeka's home planet, in a attempt to
steal Tsunami. Ryouko was unsuccessful and fled Jurai, with the crown
prince of Jurai, Yousho, pursuing her to earth, where Yousho shot down
Ryo-oh-ki, and forced a battle on the planet surface. Yousho defeated her
in combat, and sealed her in a cave. 700 years later, Tenchi accidentally
freed Ryouko.

In the TV series, Ryouko is a Space Pirate, who gets too drunk one day, and
is shot down by the greatest Police Detective of all time: Mihoshi ;-).
Tenchi "Rescues" Ryouko, who promptly lies to Tenchi, and tells Tenchi that
Mihoshi is a space Pirate. When the truth is revealed, she "teases" Tenchi
by trying to kill him, but ends up falling in love with Tenchi.

Aeka Masaki:

The crown princess of Jurai. Sometimes fixated with royalty, Aeka can be
petty. She has experience with the complexity of Court life, but is just as
bad as Ryouko when it comes to men.

In the OAV series she was betrothed to Yousho, her half brother, who left
Jurai to persue Ryouko. Aeka left Jurai to search for him. There is a
hidden friendship later in the series between Aeka and Ryouko, but is
marred by the mutual competition for Aeka.

In the TV series, she is still a princess, but is not engaged to Yousho.
Mihoshi issues a distress call, which Aeka recieves on board her ship,
Ryu-oh. She is immediately taken with Tenchi, but after it appears that
Ryouko has taken Tenchi from her, she tries to commit triple romantic
suicide, and rams Ryouko's ship, Ryo-oh-ki. She is left stranded on earth
with Tenchi, Mihoshi and Ryouko.

Sasami Masaki:

Aeka's little sister. Sasami deals with Tenchi much better then any of the
other girls, much to the other girls frustration. Sasami has a crush on
Tenchi, and tends to be a little mischevious. She also knows the way to a
man's heart, and cooks for the family.

In the OAV's (and hopefully, in the new TV series), there is much more to
Sasami. Sasami is the alter ego of Tsunami. When Sasami was a young girl,
when Ryouko attacked Jurai, Sasami was thrown from a overhang, and
collapsed in front of one of the Jurain Trees. The tree (either Tsunami, or
a tree that was linked to Tsunami) merged with Sasami to save Sasami's
life. In the process, Tsunami assimilated with Sasami, making them one and
the same.

Nobiyuki Masaki:
Tenchi's perverted old father. He is a widower, and has never re-married.
He tends to enjoy tormenting his son, and is looking forward to being a
grandfather ;-)

Yousho Masaki:

Tenchi's Grandfather. He is unphasable, and typically knows much more then
he lets on. While he does not seem to have a lot of power (as in being able
to blast stuff) he is incredibly skillful, beating Mihoshi's Mecha suit (in
the TV series) with a Bokken (wooden practice sword), and Kagato with
Tenchiken (in the OAV's).

In the OAV series, he left Jurai 700 Years ago to persue Ryouko. Later he
admits that he was looking for a way to leave Jurai. He takes a assumed
name, and has a daughter, Achika, who is Tenchi's mother.

Washu:
A mad scientist ;-). Washu created Ryouko, and Ryo-oh-ki. She has a
interest in Tenchi, but it appears to be more of a motherly figure then
anything else. She appears to be a 12-year-old redheaded girl, but in
reality, is probably older then 20,000 years old. She attended the Science
Academy, and at one point or another, was the chairperson.

In the OAV series, She is one of the three most powerful "goddesses" in the
universe. During episode 6, she is trapped inside of Kagato's ship. Mihoshi
accidentally frees her. All though she is powerful, her power is never
flaunted.

She was once married and had a child, who was taken away from her, because
she was not royalty. She is also Ryouko's mother, and created Soja and
Ryo-oh-ki.

In the TV series, Washu is an exiled mad scientist, who is locked in a
capsule, which crashes into earth. Because Human beings have a instinct to
know what is or isn't evil, they created a shrine, and put Washu's capsule
in a large cave, to make sure she never escaped.

Mihoshi:

A blonde ;-) Mihoshi is a member of the Galaxy Police. She is commonly
referred to as the "luck vampire" as she is the most incredibly lucky
person in the universe, and her partner is the single most unlucky.

The grand daughter of the GP head in the OVA, and she gets many of the
newest equipment due to that reason. Her ship, weapons, and most of her
items are either illegal or far more powerful than the one that is normal
sold, or owned by another officer. She can put out the fire but instead she
will bring a flood along. [Thanks to Yagami]

In the OAV series, Mihoshi is ordered to scout for Kagato, which she
interprets as capturing Kagato. Unfortunately, Mihoshi crashes her ship on
earth, and is saved from being sucked into a black hole by Tenchi. Mihoshi
is a ditz with a purpose in the OAV series.

In the TV series, Mihoshi is in pursuit of the dreaded space pirate Ryouko.
Mihoshi is a ditz with out a purpose in the TV series.

Kiyone:

Mihoshi's Partner in the TV series. She is not in the OAV series. Kiyone
tends to be the sanest of the Tenchi girls, primarily because she is not
interested in Tenchi. She acts as a foil for Mihoshi.

Kagato:

The Villain everyone loves to hate. However his OAV personality and his TV
personality are incredibly different.

In the OAV series, he is in search for the ultimate power. That leads him
to Earth, and Yousho, in particular. He tries to take the "master key" from
Tenchi and Yousho in OAV 5, but is defeated by Yousho.

Kagato in the TV series that goes after "the power of Jurai" and the
Juraian throne. In the past he rebelled against the Juraian government and
fought with his bestfriend--Yousho--for the Juraian throne, and lost. After
he was defeated, he was sent to the dark galaxy and the Juraian government
concluded that he was dead (Space-year 2635 or Jurai-year 1844, march. The
government completely deleted all traces of Kagato and only revealed
Yousho's heroic acts, Yousho, being disgusted and tired disappeared. The
throne of Jurai was passed on to the family closest to the Royal house (or
Aeka's family). After a while (in Space year 2688/Jurai year 1894,
December) he returned to Jurai using Yousho's name. Seeing his overwhelming
"power of Jurai" the Juraian Parliament concluded that he was Yousho and he
succeeded the throne. He claimed that the new government had stablized and
declared that all the other members of the Royal family to be caught and
imprisoned. For Princess Aeka he was far more strict, he accused her of
being a betrayer and ordered her to be caught. [Thanks to Yagami].

Most agree that in the OAV series, there is something more then just the
good girl Vs. bad guy relationship between Kagato and Washu, but not
everyone agrees what that relationship is.

Funaho Masaki:

Tenchi's Great Grandmother, Yousho's Mother. The saner of the two Jurain
queens. She comes to earth to seek out Washu to make sure that Washu does
not help other nations to build Ryouko's & Ryo-oh-ki's. She does not appear
in the TV series.

[anyone have any information about her manga appearance? Or novel appearance?]

Misaki Masaki:
Misaki is Misaki, there is no other description possible. Misaki is the
other Jurain queen. She does not show up in the TV series.

Seriyou:
Tenchi's would be opponent for Aeka's heart. He failed to learn the fourth
law of thermodynamics. "Where Mihoshi is, Chaos reigns."

Tokimi:

We don't know much about Tokimi. Only that Tokimi wants to talk to Washu,
calls Washu and Tsunami her sisters, and is _very_ powerful. According to
Tenchi 101, she is the most powerful of the three Goddesses.

Tsunami:

Tsunami originally was a Jurain "will". That is, a councessness embedded in
a tree, which is able to command a ship. According to Aeka, Tsunami is the
most powerful ship the Jurians have. Tsunami's human form, Sasami grown up,
is identified as being the third goddess.

#PLACES AND THINGS

Places & Things in the Tenchi Universe:

LIGHT HAWK WINGS

Light Hawk Wings [in Japanese: Kou-ou-yoku] -
The light hawk wings are defensive weapons that any 0-2 generation Jurian
warship is capable of generating. They take the appearance of propeller
blades, and are capable of projecting a sphere of energy a long distance.
Ryu-oh (Aeka's 2nd generation ship) is capable of generating 3 Light Hawk
Wings. Tsunami is capable of generating 10.

In OAV 6 & OAV 11, Tenchi generates LHW's without the aid of a Jurian ship.
Once to defeat Kagato, and once to invert a black hole.

The Light Hawk Wings do not exist in the TV series.

TENCHIKEN (MASTER KEY)

Tenchiken is a Master key. The master keys are devices that "drain" power
from the Jurai trees. The Jurain Family all have keys, and in addition,
they keys are given by the Jurain Trees, to a noble which they consider to
be their partners.

According to Tenchi 101, the keys are formed from the sap & bark of the
tree. Tenchiken is a level 1 key, meaning that it can control any
Generation 1 tree (like Funaho, Yousho's ship) or 1.5, 2 or 3rd generation
ship (For instance it can control Ryu-oh which is a 2nd Generation ship).
While Aeka's key (her tiera on her head) can only control 2nd & 3rd Gen
ships(since her ship is only a 2 Generation).

In the TV series, no such link is established, and the Keys are more
important, especially in the Movie.

[source: Tenchi 101]

THE GEMS:

Ryouko originally had three gems, according to legend, the gems are the
source of her powers. As Yousho sliced each of the gems off her, the gem
was absorbed in Tenchiken.

In OAV 13, we learn that the gems have the same power source that the
Jurain Tree's do. Therefore, it is possible that once Ryouko re-gains all
of the gems, she will be able to generate Light Hawk Wings.

According to 101, Ryouko with all of the gems would be as powerful as
Tsunami.

THE MASAKI HOME-

The Masaki Home is where Tenchi & the rest of the girls live. Aeka and
Sasami share a room, Ryouko dosen't have a room (she prefers to be in
Tenchi's room anyways ;-). Sasami normally does all of the cooking, and the
chores are split among everyone. Washu has converted a broom closet
downstars into a sub-dimensional portal which leads to her huge sub-space
lab (A whole solar system ;-0 .

In the OAV series, Tenchi lived in the middle of some Suburbs. When Aeka
came, Ryouko transported the house onto her ship. When Ryo-oh-ki later
crashed, it happened to be by Tenchi's grandfathers shrine & Ryouko's cave.
The house burns down in OAV 6, but is rebuilt.

In the TV series, the house has always been near the Shrine.

Ryouko's Cave-

In the OAV series, Ryouko is banished to a cave, where she is kept alive by
a small amount of power. This is the Masaki shrine. Later, Tenchi breaks
into the shrine, and ends up freeing Ryouko. Ryouko had been diverting the
power to keep her alive, to building up enough power to break out. While
she was doing this, she watched Tenchi grow up and fell in love with him.
In the TV series, Ryouko is never banished to the cave.

Washu's Cave-

In the TV series, Washu is exiled for being a mad scientist. She lands on
earth, and is imprisoned in the cave. Ryouko accidentally frees her, when
Ryouko tries to get Tenchi alone in the Cave. This only happens in the TV
series.

Soja- Kagato's ship. Kagato's ship, like Ryouko, is able to draw power from
the Gems. Soja is huge, all of the corridors lead to Kagato. It also has a
"mirror plane" built in. Washu is trapped in the Mirror Plane.

Ryo-oh-ki-

Ryouko's ship which turns into a cabbit (a cross between a rabbit and a
cat.... ;-) It has a insane desire for Carrots, and in the OAV series,
gains a human form which resembles a 3 or 4 year old girl.

Tsunami-

Tsunami is a Jurain Tree, which has a will and intelligence. According to
Tenchi 101, Tsunami helped found the Jurain Empire. Like most of the Trees,
Tsunami has a battle ship, which is capable of generating 10 Light Hawk
Wings. In addition, Tsunami can project herself anywhere. Tsunami is now
merged with Sasami, and now resembles what Sasami will look like when she
grows up.

# THE OAV's
[Summery]
[Debates]
Does anyone have a copy of the Summaries that I can use?

# THE TV SERIES.
[Summery]
[Debates]
Ditto.

# TENCHI 101

Q: What is Tenchi 101?
A: [Yagami Makibi]: book that Kajishima made (edited by Kuroda Yousuke, I
think) to explain many "mystery" of the Tenchi-verse. After all, many
things are not well explained nor shown.

Q: Is Tenchi 101 Cannon?
A: Technically it is, however not all fans believe it ;-) Tenchi 101 (here
after referred to as 101) many times contradicts what the OAV series says.
For instance, 101 claims that the gem of Ryouko's neck is needed to control
any monsters she might conjure. In the OAV series, that is not so, the Gem
on her right wrist is the controlling gem.

Q: What things do Tenchi 101 introduce, that is not said in the OAV series.
A: 101 gives some details about the key's and their nature. The Key's
according to 101, are formed from the bark of the Tree and the Sap. 101
also establishes that the lower the generation of the key, the more
"powerful" the key is. 101 continues to say that the Keys follow a
pyramidal power structure, that is, any 1st generation key, can control all
2nd generation trees, as well as the first generation key it was formed from.

101 also maintains that Nobuiki was also a descendent of Yousho, from a
different side of the family.

101 says that Ryouko really was trying to kill Tenchi in OAV 1.

# SOUND FILE

Q: What is the Sound File?
Q: What is the Aeka 'S' song?
A thing that AIC/Pioneer came up with to have the fans understand the
characters in depth (yeah right ^-^;;). OK, enough with jokes, this is
the exact thing written about the sound file by Dragon Magazine:

It is a music clip that includes 6 songs and "Ryoko's Theme". Within
all of them, "Magical Girl Pretty Sammy" gained the most popularity
due to the wonderful transforming scene, also "Call me Princess" by Aeka
was a nice song with pictures of Tenchi being whipped in the BG.
There is a online Shrine to Aeka which contains lyrics and a .mp2 file of
the sound at http://www-ucsee.EECS.Berkeley.EDU/~stanhong/aeka-sm/. The
english lyrics are also there.

# PRETTY SAMY

#WARNING*WARNING*WARNING*WARNING: PRETTY SAMMY IS IN THE OPINION OF THIS
#AUTHOR THE ULTIMITE EVIL!!!!! UNLESS YOU LOVE SAILOR MOON, OR WANT
#TO SEE SASAMI IN A SHORT SKIRT, DO NOT WATCH THIS!!!!

Q: What is Pretty Sammy?
A:
A joke at AIC, gone horribly wrong ;-). In the sound file, they did a song,
sung by Sasami's voice actress, in which, Sasami does a sailor moon like
change to become Pretty Sammy, to save the man she loves, Tenchi ;-).
Somehow, it was made into 2 OAV episodes. From there, it became a TV series.

If you get into details there are 13 or more variations of Pretty Sammy!
(^-^;;

Q: Who are the Charecters in Pretty Sammy?
A:

Kawai Chihiro (Sasami's mother)
Kawai Tenchi (Whose this? ^-^;;)
Kawai Sasami (Kawai=Kawaii ^-^;;)
Orikasa Ryoko (Whose Ryoko's voice actress? ^-^;;)
Takeda Aeka (Same as above ^-^;;)
Mizutani Mihoshi (Who is Mizutani Yuuko? ^-^;;)
Kiyone Yuri (I like Amano Yuri's voice, you know ^-^;;)
Kobayashi Washu (Anything to say? ^-^;;)

Q: How is each varient of Pretty Sammy different?
A: [I have no clue]

# Tenchi Muyo in Love:
[Synopsys]
Q: What aspects of the movie show that it is based on the TV series?
A: [Ken Arrmode]:
There is a flashback to young Tenchi and Achika that is directly from the
TV series. Kiyone is on Earth in the movie, like in the TV series.
Reference is made to a job that she and Mihoshi had in the TV series, in
addition, Mihoshi's and Kiyone's Apartment is shown. Washu does not try to
get Ryouko to call her "mother". Achika looks different than in the OAV
series. Aeka is not related to Youshou, nor does he have any past history
with her or Ryouko, so when he meets them in the past he does not recognize
them. References to building the house do not fit chronologically with the
OAV (especially since the house has to be rebuilt after OAV 7.
