I assume you have modern windows?

<rant> They are unplayable on my Linux box and Macintosh... both at 2Ghz (t
he same goes with some Unix boxes where I used to work). I can play ANY ot
her video up to HD w/H264 (.mp4, .avi and .ogm) and many 60fps .avi's, but
cannot play matroska with soft subs.
It's because matroska is ONLY native to windows. Hacked players have been
made for Macs and other platforms (VLC, perian), but they are horribly slug
gish, and choke on either large video sizes, or subtitle streams, lord help
you if both are used (1 frame per minute is often a real result).

I can actually be coding an .avi Xvid video, downloading 1000kbs with Azure
us, burning a DVD at 16x speed and watching an .avi 848x480 video, ALL AT T
HE SAME TIME on my Mac with no problems or skips (and often do... which ter
rifies one of my friends), but cannot watch .mkv subtitled 704x400 videos w
ith an unladen system.

Sadly due to the x264 encoder and poorly constructed mkv containers, I have
been unable to transcode almost all matroska'd anime. I have no problems
with any other containers regardless of codec. This is a great tell. (and
 I do have MKVTOOLNIX). ^_^

I would be happy if the people who are still constructing the matroska cont
ainer would fulfill the promise they make on their homepage, but they have
no interest at all in doing so. So I am just annoyed everytime I am offere
d no choice but to try to watch one.</rant>
