I watched the first seven episodes of the above with my sister, and found
it to be often cute and very silly but hard to recognize as derived from
Tenchi-Muyou! and, so far, no more than whipped meringue topping compared
to the rich goodness that is Pretty Samy TV.
Misao, at least, is recognizable as a happier Misao, and Mihoshi-sensei
keeps to her Tenchi TV characterization (or noncharacterization, if you
would). Kozuka Washuu-sensei shows flashes of being Washuu, now and then,
and thoughtfully has red eyes so as to easily distinguish her from any
other Washuu out there (she's also voiced by Hiramatsu Akiko). I'm not
sure why the staff chose to rename Anri, as in appearance, character, and
possessiveness of the character she likes, she's clearly based on Haida
Konoha from Pretty Samy.
The aspects of Iwakura Sasami that she has in common with any other
Sasami, however, are pretty much those that she also has in common with
any number of other little-girl heroines. Given that her parents share
given names with the Kawai parents and not much else, and that
Ryoh-oh-ki's function so far has been as the nonspeaking butt of much of
the physical comedy, I think I pretty much agree with my sister that they
could file off the names and basic character designs and release it as an
unrelated series.
Now what DOES remind me of Tenchi -- at least, in all the aspects that
drew me to like it in the first place -- is another series I recently
finished, Gakuen Senki Muryou, released on R1 as Shingu: Secret of the
Stellar Wars. This series is awesome. It's sort of like OAV Tenchi,
without turning into a harem show (that is, there are romantic feelings
and misunderstandings, but they're sort of one more "oh, yes, that" that
fit in the subplots along with the galactic politicking in the back room
of the sushi bar and the occasional giant-beating-the-crap-out-of-UFOS),
and with a sort of nostalgic school story woven in instead. Words cannot
describe how much you should all see this show, if you haven't already.
