I play FFXI on the Asura server. My character is
"Katsuhito" named after Tenchi's grandfather.
Currently a 14th level White Mage/Black Mage.

The game can be a grind, even more so than WOW. The
game forcing you to party is one hangup the
development team seems to have. Its a legacy holdover
from the single-player FF games which all were a group
of characters in a party, thus they make you have to
party to keep with the spirit of Final Fantasy. I
believe this needs to change in order for FFXI to
compete with many of the new MMORPG arrivals coming
soon to consoles.

I play the Windows PC version of FFXI.

The Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion looks pretty
interesting and addresses a few issues. At the Fan
Convention a month ago in California, the development
team revealed there will be areas where players can
solo, the new Assault game where you must defend a
town under seige, and the new PvP game is interesting
also.

I like the idea of the new jobs:
Corsair - A pirate/mercenary class whose abilities are
based on luck. A Corsair has a gun and a deck of
cards, the effect of his gun depends on the card he
draws. Sometime the gun can have a magical effect,
also there is a chance that a card can be drawn that
will enhance members of a party you might be in, thus
this will be a technical job sort of like Thief and
Bard.
PuppetMaster - This job is very mysterious.
SquareEnix has not released too much info on this one.
You get to control a custumizable doll that travels
with you and can fight by your side. Its possible you
need to summon the doll like a Dragoon must summon his
Wyvern and can only hold it out so long per level.
Blue Mage - This is the new job that has many players
drooling. For so long we've wanted to be able to dish
out some pain on the mobs that have made our leveling
up lives a living hell, and with Blue Mage we get to
throw the special attacks they used on us back at
them. The Blue Mage has the ability to learn special
attacks used by mobs and beastmen and can equip
certain learned abilities up to a certain level per
level of experience. In the various videos released
there was a Blue Mage seen using a Cactar's
devestating Thousand Needles attack, and the less
lethal but still annoying Bomb Toss used by many
Goblins.

There will be many new area, a whole new continent
will be added to the game, and a ship from Mhaura (a
port town in the game) will be the access point to
that far away land. SquareEnix did say a specific
quest would have to be complete to gain access to the
new areas. In each major city there is an Aht Urghan
NPC belonging to a Mercenary company. He gives you a
badge and you must goto the map coordinates in each
area of the city and talk to the NPCs there to finish
the quest. The last people on the list are within the
Air Ship Docks, thus for players to complete this
quest you must already have your airship pass which
means you must already be Rank 5 with your current
nation. I'm not sure if this is the quest needed to
enter the new areas but then again it could be. The
expansion ships on April 18th and the Treasures of Aht
Urghan content will not be activated on the servers
until April 20th.
