Actually, the LHW had been foreshadowed. Tenchi is told both by Yosho (who may not
know) and Tsunami (who probably does know) that he "has a power that hasn't been awakened
yet." Then Kagato tries to kill him, Tenchi pops the LHW, and the audience
says, "Oh, that's what was being talked about."
A perfect example of foreshadowing as a plot device.
