Interestingly enough, LotR is very similar to TM!R in that both creators spent years
working on back story and in the final product, still didn't get all of their material
included.  Tolkien did eventually get the other material published after his
death and K-sensei has been putting stuff out in doujinshi and Q&A's, but there is
still stuff to learn in TM!R.
