I had something odd happen this morning, and I'm not sure whether I should be concerned
or not...
The network in my apartment is set up so that when you log on, you're hooked into
the DSL connection automatically. Sometimes when you enter a URL (generally bad ones
so far - don't think its happened with a good URL to date; though only a few bad
ones trigger this behavior) the Dial-Up Connection panel pops up. If you click Connect,
the computer tries to connect, but nothing happens. If the box pops up, then the
next time you attempt to use a link or connect to a new page, then a small
Connection panel will pop up (not the full-blown Dial-up thing - basically just Connect
or Cancel), and pressing Connect will link you back up to the internet.
This morning I decided to check an item or two on the internet before leaving for
work, and I had some odd things happen...
The first suggestion that something was wrong was during the boot up process for XP.
I was presented with the opportunity to select which User Account I wanted to use.
This was unusual because I've never had this screen appear before. I've only set
up one user on the computer, and it was the only one visible, so I selected it and
logged in. Then I brought up Internet Explorer, hit Stop Load, and selected the website
I wanted to visit. The Dial-Up panel appeared. So I canceled that, closed my
IE session, and opened a new one. The small connection panel appeared, I clicked
Connect, and IE opened. And the Dial-Up panel appeared again.
I figured there was probably a connection with the Select User screen appearing at
boot-up, and switched over to the Users function in Control Panel. And there I had
a small surprise. In addition to my own User Account, there was also one called
"ASP.NET". There was also a small bit of text associated with it, and it ended with
"machine a..." (yes, there were ellipses at the end, even when I double checked in
the Change Name screen). ASP.NET didn't show up in the Documents and Settings
folder (where the User IDs are typically stored). But a file search turned up the
word in the Windows directory, and a folder that came complete with a Microsoft EULA.
So I'm not certain if the ASP.NET account is something Windows correctly put in place,
or if something else is going on here. Its possible that the only reason that I couldn't
get an internet connection is because the physical connection is down for
some reason - i.e. not a problem on my end. But then again, I've never had the User
Selection screen pop up when I did my boot up, so there's at least one thing different.
Any ideas on whether or not there's a problem here?
