Oh, lord forbid, I wouldn't want anything of the sort.  Though I can't
say, I wouldn't wish a few of the characters were real.

Like replicant said, it's a shounen show, primarily aimed at boys.  But
even if it weren't, you do have to realize that one of the main
creators is a dirty old man, and therefore you get the pretty girls
fantasy thrown in heavily.  Apparently even much more so, it seems with
the new OVAs.

Personally, what made me a fan was with the OVAs (first two, but
primarily the first), and their richness of texture and background, and
excellent storytelling (the amount of foreshadowing through the show at
various levels/intensities was phenomenal).  Even after watching the
show for practically 10 years, there is still things to find in the
visuals, that didn't seem important on first glance -- Toonami viewers
will not see much if any of this due to horrid editing.
Plus, the show covers a dozen genres: romance, comedy, action,
adventure, drama, science fiction, fantasy, etc., and keeps them all
interlaced in a very balanced, enjoyable mix.

Now, if only it could continue that way, as the last 3 eps have been
severely lacking...
