It makes sense to release boxes this way, though. First, it rewards the big
series fans, who were undoubtedly getting annoyed that their 'reward' for
grabbing the series when it first came out was not getting the box that was
released much later. Second, it also encourages people to buy entire sets.
Its one thing to have half of a series sitting on the shelf, and no intention
of getting the remaining volumes. Its another thing when you have half of a
series and a large half empty box sitting on your DVD shelf. Sure, its not
much of an incentive, but I'm sure it provides some encouragement.
At any rate, I'm hardly complaining.
Its also true that this doesn't apply to all series. Gundam Zeta will be
coming out as a complete box set at release (and will apparently NOT be
airing on Cartoon Network anytime soon - Gundam SEED, which is currently
finishing up in Japan, will apparently be the next Gundam series on CN).
Crest of the Stars is available in a single plastic case, and I imagine
Banner of the Stars I and II will follow this pattern. So there are
exceptions to the "Box and Vol. 1" pattern.
