A theorized backstory done as a fanfic. My apologies
for your confusion. Clarity has never been one of my
better attributes. 

My proposition is that Kajishima, perhaps because of
Zen Buddhist roots, is using a Chinese myth as
inspiration for Tenchi Muyo. The Archer myth is a
metaphor for normal human failings. Yi is a kind of
underdog everyman who has his heart in the right
place, but like the rest of us he's still trying to
figure out his place in the greater scheme of things.
He has great ability, but not great wisdom. So he gets
himself stuck halfway between the crap he came up from
and the exalted position that he might still
accomplish.  "Habuki" is the same way; she's a runt
that got in way over her head through a both great
skill and low character, becomes half person and half
god, and gets stuck.

Oh and Reps flaming me? <Mock Astonishment> Forgive
me. I've seen Rep's mailings for years and he's never
changed. Back when I was just a wee lurker, he was
farting his hot air all over the bandwidth, so its not
just personal experience I'm talking from. He's an
insignificant nobody normally, and he comes on to the
list to pump himself up with self importance. (Or
maybe I'm describing myself, but at least I admit it.)
Reps whole existence is expressed through his email,
which seems devoted to overshadowing other people by
its very volume. Its effect is toxic, because being
flamed by him intended to leave a lasting mark on
anybody with the gall to stand up to him, leaving a
suppine list that he can dominate.  And its hard not
to notice his crap in the archives, which stands out
from the normal bland stuff by its lacerating tone and
venom. He wants this list to be about him, and his
self pontification at length about his meager
accomplishments (The other 299,999 people who play
Tekken 4 don't care if you do, rep). I don't care
because I ignore the little SOB like an bug caught in
the zapper.
