There's a reason for this. Apple's DVD sucks on interlaced DVDs
(which is most anime DVDs).
The R1 Tenchi OAV set is fully progressive--to some that know better
than I do, it would appear that it is straight from a film source and
has never gone through a composite editing process (which has been
known to damage video quality with DVDs). R1 Tenchi has some MPEG-2
compression problems, though (they did cram 13 OAV eps on to 2 DVDs).
R2 Tenchi, IIRC, is interlaced, but is compressed better.
Bottom line? R2 Tenchi will show interlacing artifacts
(combing/zipper effects) through out the show through Apple's DVD
player (if you have retail Radeon card and turn on Adaptive
Deinterlacing, you will get noise, but the interlacing artifacts will
be minimized). R1 Tenchi will show MPEG-2 artifacts (including
macro-blocking) every now and then, but no interlacing artifacts.
