Yes, that agrees with what I read, they found a knife in his bag later.

However, the Japanese police definition of 'knife' is something like
'anything with a sharp edge longer than 6cm', so it is possible that he
simply has a hobby knife or box cutter in his bag...  It is known that
police will actively look for and charge people with carrying even a
swiss army knife.

But now some news stories are calling him the 'knife man', even though
the knife didn't have a role in the incident, as far as I know. Ah, the
mass media and sensationalism.
