I didn't notice the change either, though while I was watching the
special on TV the other night, I didn't find anything odd about the
"wotaku" spelling, so I guess perhaps I realized it subconsciouly.

I need to stop being lazy by getting computer stuff from Yodobashi in
Shinjuku, and spend more time in Akiba.
