The program was filmed a couple of months ago. Lots of report/blog
talking about this. At least 1 maid cafe was used as location. Also,
they built a tiny arena just outside Akiba station in front of the new
IT buildings for a quiz section. Participants needed to climb a sliding
slope in order to answer quesetions. Seen some photos out there, but
forgot the URL...

Not really.

Starting end 2003, a few "economist" and "business analyst" performed
some research on the "otaku" industry. Many books were published on
this. It was reported that the Otaku industry worth certain amount
of business (forgot the figure, but it was large, tens of billions..).

After that many TV shows talking about Akiba appeared. I have watched
quite a few. Those are mainly on the shopping trends of Otaku, the
monthly spending, and the living standards...

The new IT buildings in AKiba, Tsukuba Express's opening, and the
opening of Yodobashi helps too.

One of the Royal family member got married last year and moved to
some place near Akiba. This also cause some police actions in the
area.

Maid Cafe boom, 2ch's Densha Otoko and its subsequence products
(book, play, movie, TV, etc), Hagaren boom, manga => TV boom
(H2, Attack #1, etc.), anime => live action movie boom (Cutey Honey,
karshan (sp?)), manga => live action movie boom (Nana, Touch), etc,
also contributes.

Oh, BTW, Densha Otoko's TV episode where Densha took Hermes to Akiba
was fun, especially the scene where Hermes said "Moe?" and got all the
guys in the gamecen swooning..... (^_^)
