"Mi" in one of commonly used kanji means Beauty which is associated with 
Females.
 

Without knowing it's kanji,having not seen and heard of the person.The first 
likely gender impression you'll gather will be female due to "Mi" commonly 
found part of a girl's name as either prefix or suffix and middle.
 

Eg: Miyuki (prefix),Honami (suffix) and Yumiko (middle)

Makoto is regarded as a male name and people will generally think that person 
is a male without knowing it's kanji,having not seen and heard of the 
person.But taking out female names like Ma from Mari and Koto out of 
Kotoko.You end up having Makoto but the female name.
 

Names ending with "ko" is for females.

"ri" as prefix or suffix is for females too.Eg Rika and Saori.

Names end with "shi","ro" and "suke" are for males.
Eg: For "shi" will be Musashi,Hitoshi and Konishi.For "ro" will be 
Taro,Yotaro and Kentaro.For "suke" will be Kyosuke,Sasuke and Ryonosuke.
 

"ichi" as prefix,suffix and middle of a name is also for males.
Eg : Ichiro (prefix),Soichiro (middle) and Kenichi (Suffix)
