The index card basically works as a bounce flash or if thin enough, a
diffuser. Get an index card slightly wider than the flash, bend in the
rough shape of an "L", and tape below the flash head. "Hinge" the card
below the flash so you can bend it back and forth to modify the bounce
angle. Takes a bit of experimentation to get it right. White loose
leaf
paper also works pretty good as a diffuser, just be careful since some
flashes can get pretty hot.
