That is why I don't often us that plot device in my
stories.  From time to time they have appeared but
well after certain things have been partially
resolved.  In the final chapter of "Family Reunion 2"
such an event takes place, but by then all
relationships have been resolved and everyone is just
trying to come out of the experience without getting
vaporized (literally).

For non-Ranma+Akane fics I like to use the situation
of Akane loosing Ranma to someone else as a "life's
lesson" teaching her the error of her ways.  She
realizes that not all the problems in their
relationship stemmed from Ranma himself, he did
contribute to the problem quite a bit, but she allowed
it to get to her more often than not.  I DETEST
Akane/Ayeka Bashers so I let the characters redeem
themselves in some fashion and come away from the
experience a better person.
