I am generally of the opinion that "Edited for Television" is the sign
of great evil in the Anime world.
But the really sticky points come from (1) financing a US translation
by doing a TV release (2) making such extensive edits that a single
hybrid DVD release is not feasible.
The existence of hybrid DVD releases has underminded the basis for
many of the dub/sub tensions of the past, since economies of
scale favor a single hybrid release if they haven't been doing extensive
edits for the dub.
The way they did the Sailor Moon S, and Super S seasons was a comparitively
good model, comparied to the earlier releases: they produced a (silly)
dub script, dubbed the _entire_ video track, then cut additional
scenes for the TV version. This left them with parallel video for a DVD.
"CardCaptors" was a hack-and-slash edit of the worst kind: but fan
pressure/demand led to the release of a seperate subtitled DVD.
Ranma 1/2 has the minor virtue of having a commercial sub release
for home video already "in the can". On the other hand, this work
wasn't always done with a future DVD release in mind.
I read a review of the Viz season 2 DVD box which asserted that it
appeared to have been done from the Viz dub video source. Can anyone
comment on this?
Having already bought a lot of Ranma 1/2 twice (dub/sub anime, US/Japanese
manga), I'm not rushing to complete my collection (I put it
on my Xmas list, but have been spending more money/time on stuff
that's new to me.
