The only ways to get past someones defense like that is to either be quicker
than they, or to fake them out or hit them with combinations. The quick thing
is just training yourself to be faster than they are, so you can punch/kick
faster than they can block. Faking them out is pretty straight foreward.
Through a punch (or kick or whatever else) at them from one direction and
through another punch from another direction. Some people it works better on
than others.
The combination thing is what I would suggest. It is never ever helpful in a
fight to through one punch/kick and back off. You may get lucky and hit them
and thats only if they arent paying attention for some reason or just are
really not too good. But throwing a bunch of punches and kicks in succession
works really well. But you have to look for openings and use the fake out
thing as well. Or you can give them a fake opening on you that you think they
will go for and if they do then their guard will be much weaker and you may
be able to get a hit in.
Perfect Practice Makes Perfect. Try different things. You will never know if
they work until you try, and if you get hurt in the process oh well, you are
in martial arts you are supposed to get hurt.
