The translation of having anything to do with race is misleading
in this context. The initial kanji, pronounced D long-O, basically
means "same" and appears in many compounds. The root word "doujin",
refers, among other things, to a group of people with something
in common. My dictionary says "a coterie; a clique; a fraternity;
a club; kindred spirits". My understanding is that doujinshi
are manga self-published by such a small group: thus the name.

I suppose some science fiction fanzines come close in content
and the means of production.

The capital "H" stands for "etchi" and refers to adult content:
the word derives from the pronounciation of the initial letter "h"
in "hentai", which is a somewhat stronger term for someone
who is sexually lewd or deviant.

Not all anime-related dojinshi have sexual content: like US fan-fiction,
it tends to cover all sorts of playing around with a another author's
characters.

Some established manga authors have also been known to do
doujinshi featuring their _own_ characters on the side...
