14. The Spring Special ended at the end of volume 8, with a much less
romantically-charged ending.

I have less of a problem with the fights in the Ranma anime because (to me)
it's a case of the anime taking a certain behavior and having it occur more
often than in the manga, rather than changing it. Ranma does
stupid/thoughtless/etc stuff to hurt Akane's/other's feelings, and gets
kicked/punched/malleted/etc for it. One way or another, he deserves
it. The anime just does it every third episode, instead of every 5th/6th,
or whatever the manga frequency is.

OTOH, Naru only hits Keitaro (manga) when he trips and cops an accidental
feel, or pulls her clothing down, or comes up through the hole in the floor
to talk and catches her in her scanties, or sees another of the girls in
the buff. Thing is, this happens a LOT. A whole lot. You can hardly go
through a storyline without getting an eyeful (Akamatsu got his start with
H dojinshi, IIRC), so you know Keitaro is getting the treatment pretty
regularly. The problem for me is that the LH anime has almost eliminated
the amount of skin shown (apparently they're not as casual about nudity as
we stereotypically think), but the amount of 'comedic' violence remains the
same- now Naru hits him for something as minor as giving an answer that
exasperates her.

Problem is, IMO, a lot of the manga development happens around the study
table, or other times when it'd be too boring to make an anime episode out
of it.

Gotta go with Mutsumi, myself. Not for the underdog vote, but I also tend
towards the ones who openly admit to their affection for someone, instead
of denying it to God Himself if asked. She really gets the shaft in the
anime- she appears to be much more of a (passive) threat to Naru in the
manga, and some of her classic fainting scenes are underused. There's a
popular Kasumi fanfic idea that has her secretly knowing more than she lets
on, but there doesn't seem to be much manga precedent for it. Mutsumi
demonstrates on a few occasions she knows exactly the stress Keitaro is
under having to choose between Naru and herself- Naru's Christmas Ultimatum
being the one that comes to mind the easiest...
