Well, it seems to be axiomatic in Japan "The more they fight, the
closer they are". I've seen this applied to both same-sex and mixed-sex
couples. The most memorable example where this is actually quoted
is in reference to Usagi and Rei in Sailor Moon (when Ami and
Makoto meet for the first time), but I think there's some of this
implicit in the remarks between Soun and Genma in the first
episode, and it seems to be a recurring theme in anime to
have a couple who are often fighting but seem to belong together.
I suppose if dislike was all they was involved, they'd just stop
talking to/seeing each other, in most cases. Though another
recurring theme is characters that are thrown together by
circumstances.
