Well, the manga ended early in 1996, nominally with the March 6,1996
issue of Shonen Sunday. (Actual street dates vary from the date
printed on the issue, I forget how much. A friend who went out to
the Japanese bookstore regularly picked up the issue.)

But, it was becoming evident that the end was near, sometime before
that, so you might describe late 1995 as "the manga was ending", too. 
Do you recall the month, or should we search the archives...

The ML was rather more active, with a couple of people posting summaries
and comments on the chapters as Shonen Sunday came out.

I hadn't been on very long myself, I think I started late summer,
early fall 1995. I have my post starting the OCS from October 1995.
