IMO, I really have never had a problem with the English voice acting (and
Sarah
Strange made an excellent Ranma, IMO; the guy who replaced her sounded okay,
but not quite right (Of course, the Japanese VA is the best, also IMO). With
the
first OAV release, they needed work, but started out well; after that, they
got better.
Venus Terzo was (is?) very good as Ranma-chan; pity she wasn't quite as good
as A-ko.
As for the dub situation, many started watching Ranma either by buying the
LDs
early on and using a summary or guesswork, or by catching The Ranma Project
fansubs (which is how I first saw Ranma, well before Viz had the rights).
Many
got used to hearing their favorite characters performed by the original
Japanese
seiyuu. When they first heard the Ocean dubs, it was, shall we say,
unnatural to
hear them in English (It took me aback as well). But IMO they got better.
Actually, the only times I have been totally disgusted with a dub was
listening to
the Bubblegum Crisis dubs (OAVs); good thing the DVDs have the Japanese
soundtrack, which I changed to real fast; and the Urusei Yatsura dubs.
Of course, by the time I had watched the dub of the first 2 eps, I had
watched
a little over 100 eps (counting the OAVs and movies) several times, so maybe
the shock
was too great....NAHHHH, the dub sucked eggs ^_^. As for the dubbed
Beautiful Dreamer...
This is one of my all-time favorites, and just watching the dub brought a
tear to
my eye...and the bile to my throat. The two dub actors for Lum and Ataru
sounded
great (actually, I thought that the voice for Lum was dead-on). Mendou was
good as
well. Unfortunately, the others had to open their big yaps....the VA for
Mujaki
had a problem with synching his lines to his actions. My imitations of Orson
Welles
in Catch-22 started upon hearing it ("Take this man out and shoot him.").
Compared to that (well, and the Eternity/Malibu dubs of Capt. Harlock), the
Ranma dubs ain't so bad, now are they????
