 Glad to see you. I've been wondering if there was anyone out there
(My guess is that everyone had been in lurk since the last debate;
I myself have been rather busy dealing with a monitor that I just replaced
about a week ago (XF-70 XFlat 17"; My eyes finally can see what they've been
missing!)
and fixing my website (my ISP has a block on Angelfire domains for the NGs,
so I was finally able to get it linkable thru the Anime Web Turnpike as of
this morning.
They're cool people!).
As for Mobile Suit Gundam, it has excellent animation...for 1979, when it
was originally
released. Typical TV animation didn't improve too much until the early 80s
(look at the
animation used in Macross (weeeellll, the bits that made it into
Robotech..);
even with the great Haruhiko Mikimoto doing chara designs, it still pales
(naturally)
before the Macross:Do You Remember Love? movie. At last report tho', the
quality of the vintage animation was hurting MSGundam, and apparently, will
not be re-run after Oct. 1. Many people do want the flash, and while the
lack of
flash can be forgivable in an all-out action show like DBZ, it is apparently
not when the series is more story driven like MSG. Myself,
if the story is good or funny, then as long as the animation is not totally
atrocious,
I will watch it (like early Urusei Yatsura; later, the animation came to par
with
the story, with the input of animators like Toshihiro Hirano (who later
produced Dangaio and the Iczer series), Moriyama Yuuji (Co-creator of
the Project A-ko foursome) and Tsukasa Dokite (the best of the Dirty Pair
designers,
IMO). But the fate of MSG only serves to heighten the opinion that animation
will
make or break a series in the US market, unfortunately.
