I don't recall the circumstances, though if it was 1997, I ought to
have been here: I started in late 1995, and have been reading (or
at least skimming) the list since.

In any case this is a slower ML, with a different cast of characters
than a few years ago (not withstanding the number of lurking vets).

I've a bit of personal interest in sexuality and gender issues,
being a bi man with an unconventional sense of gender identity,
so I perk up my ears at the subject, but these haven't been lively
topics lately. The last related discussion I recall was something
about Ukyou and Konatsu. (Konatsu seeming to be transgendered,
and Konatsu's intro story providing a form of evidence that
Ukyou might be bisexual.)

The manga "Futaba-kun Change" (now being translated by Studio
Ironcat) plays with gender issues more explicitly than Ranma 1/2.

I've heard that the author was inspired by Ranma 1/2, but decided
to explore issues Takahashi stayed away from.

For example: having the two lead characters end up together on the High
School wrestling team is full of etchi possibilities, and most of them get
explored.

It still stays within binary gender roles, for the most part, but it
tends to make them look silly.
