Sure was; I have some older issues of Shonen Sunday (which Ranma was serialized
in) from 1990-91 that had tons of things (T-Shirts, idol cards, jewelry,
posters, Game
Boy game), In addition of those things (the Game Boy had at least 3 Ranma
games),
there were puzzles, models (regular and garage kits), CDs, the usual school
stuff (binders, notebooks, etc.), SNES (Super Famicom) games, one PSX fighter
(which sucked, IMO), probably as much as there was UY merchandise.
However, while there will be hardcore otaku for any popular series, there has to

be something other than non-stop action to get regular readers/viewers to keep
coming for a series long after it has ended it's run. UY had it; Maison Ikkoku
had
it; Evangelion shows signs of having it (ask me again in 5 years if this holds
true);
Unfortunately, even tho' we, as fans of the series can find it, most others can
not. (One could argue that Dragonball had it, but I think that series went so
long, it was implanted into people's minds ^_^). Look at the Dirty Pair.
It was some of the biggest stuff that the mid-80s otaku movement in the US
grooved on, yet in Japan, I don't recall it being that popular (other than
Kei and Yuri's....ah...coughassetscough ^_^). Yet many older otaku here
in the US still swear by it (well, the ones designed by Tsukasa Dokite, anyways
(and Affair on Nolandia don't count ^_<..Guy musta had too many beers that
night ^_<). Heck, I like the TV series and Project Eden myself.
But nowadays, unless the series has real holding power, it will be quickly
forgotten (which is likely why Ranma has never seen a Wideban release,
like UY and Maison Ikkoku has).

As usual, this is The Relic, from the outer fringes of the Reality
that is the Ranma ML....(and had my computer apart this weekend,
upgrading it and slappin' the stuff in a new case; Now have 288MB of
RAM to play with (and new graphics card, CPU, yada yada);
Them nasty game programs won't bring my system to it's knees
THIS time ^_^)
