>well it is a wild guess, but when Ranma came out (in Japan) Dragonball
>was on its high of success (in Japan)

Well, let's see, Ranma came out end of 87, it could fit.
Although my personal guess for a DB spoof would be YuuYuu Hakusho.

>p.s.: while I'm watching 'Mamono Hunta Yohko', did anyone notice that
>Yohko's a 'Ranma nibun no itchi' Fan?

Spelling aside, yes. IIRC there's a tankoubon lying around in her room.

Brad:

>I remember someone I knew gave me a stack of those. All I remember is
>Tin-tin and his dog (or was Tin-tin the dog?) getting on a submarine, and
>the dog getting drunk on brandy at some point...

Sounds like a scene from the Tintin album "Walking on the moon".
The anti-gravity force kicked in and made brandy bubbles, which his dog
drank.
Incidentally, the names of all those guys seems to change drastically
depending on the land, so I don't know for sure, but in Belgium it's "Tintin
et Milou". In Germany it's "Tim und Struppi".
My older bro' had them all. Burned them when we moved out 16 years ago.

Sayuri:

>Oh... right. I never really thought about jewel hunting filler, I was more
>worried about a monster-of-the-week scenario coming about.

Well, the first kinda implies the other. When you don't know exactly how
many parts there are, you can always include a tiny little piece in some
"no-name" monster and thus you end up with a filler.

Until now, the manga has none of those "no name" monsters, because it
seems to me that Takahashi is visiting the rich and varied gallery of
japanese horror stories inherent to the genre of "togi zoushi" (Feudal fairy
tales if I have to go by official translation).

>> Nothing like Kinda'ichi, though.
>Who's that?

"kinda'ichi shounen no satsujin jikenbo". It's the name of a detective
manga adapted into anime. You could call it a slightly adult version of
Conan. It deals with really sick assassins and actually managed to give
me the creeps sometimes. Although I must say that you don't need to be
as smart as the two main detectives (both have an IQ around 180) to
resolve the cases.
Anyway, that one can be considered violent.

>Oh... that'd explain why lots of kids like it. I've only seen my
>sister's manga, and it really bothered me that kids in grade three
>could be fans of the anime.

Puleeeeaaase. Don't give me that. I for myself absolutely don't care. I have
my "more adult" series all in some special boxes, be it porn or horror. If
someone not of age rummages through that, it's his/her own fault.
As for Conan, I don't see what could be too strainuous on the youngsters.
If they can watch TV without getting all depressed, they'll survive Conan
without breaking a sweat.
Besides, in Conan nothing bad happens to the main crew. (up until vol 23,
I don't know for further so please no spoilers)

Pooky:

>I hear this a lot from anime fans and i really don't understand it. They
>want to spread the joy of anime, so why would you only want a certain
>age group cut out?

Because a serie like Eva is lost on anyTHING under 15?
Because a serie like MI is lost to anyone that hasn't experienced love?
Because there's nothing more annoying than a 10 year old brat saying
wrong and stupid things about some third rank show?

Anime is used to dealing with Life. Kids do not, and try their best not to.
That's why.

If you include anime in their TV program when they're young, it can't hurt.
I'm the last who's going to say anime is bad for kids. I just say it's lost on
them most of the time. I have first hand exp to back that up, too.

Hotnit:

>Every single outfit Bruce has had on, from Fists of Fury, to
>Enter the Dragon (NO yellow Jumpsuit thank gawd) has been sported by
>Ranma at one point or another.

Hard to say. Both are martial artists, and honnestly there can't be several
thousands of martial arts garbs. My guess is that Takahashi stayed in
tune with the genre and used what is universally known as "martial artist
uniforms".
