I believe Taro just splashed the octo-water on his back. Of course,
Takahashi controls the spring mechanics enough to guarantee that an octopus
HEAD didn't appear on his back instead of the tentacles.

Ranma's female half looks like Ranma would if he'd been born a girl.
Remember everyone's commenting on how much Ranma and Nodoka looked alike.
If it were the other way, then Herb's female side would look exactly like
Ranma's, but she doesn't.
