Well, I don't know if it counts one way or the other: I was at the
office, doing a Y2K watch on the logs of the two Unix web servers I manage.

But it's on the 14th floor in a suburb that's not very built up, so
had a great view of the fireworks: the local fireworks were set off
from the roof of a parking garage nearby, so I was almost level with
the bursts, and I could see Chicagot and several other suburbs
fireworks in the distance.

I spent a day and half beforehand doing a "doomsday backup" to CD-R.

Also I found a nice Sailor Moon picture that looked like they were
having some sort of a party, and made it my a desktop picture.

I wanted to wish folks a Happy New Year sooner, but I was too busy
even though I was online.

I was at nice New Years parties several years running, but a lot
of the folks from that group have since left the Chicago area.

I suspect not all that many. There's a Bible verse that says
"no one knows the time", so it's always been a bit irregular
to tie it to a particular date. My standing joke is that
people who look so hard for the Second Coming of Christ,
feel Jesus didn't get it right the first time.

There's been Apocalypic expectation as long as there has been
Christians: I don't think the orginal followers of Jesus
expected their would be a third generation of Christians.
But after that, the organized churches have been the heirs
of people who found some way to practice their faith and
get on with life at the same time. And these days, people
interpret these ideas in a variety of ways.
