I _think_ there is some story that involves Ranma getting a fever and
not changing for that reason.

I just did a quick search of manga summaries for the word "fever":
it's in Vol 30, part 8. It's implied that it was an unusually
serious cold (Ranma got it from Happosai).

(But since it didn't show up in the series before this, it may have
been a throwaway gimmick.)

On the business of consistancy within the manga, the cursed springs
_are_ a weak point. I was on the list when the final story arc
was coming out in the manga, and the spring of drowned-you-know-who
caused great consternation, as it was assumed that someone _had_
died to create the spring.

One of my counter-explaination is that most of the spings were formed
by accident: the Mount Pheonix people were familiar with their
magic, and thus might know how to manipulate it more precisely.
