It depends on what you are trying to talk about. I got interested in
Sailor Moon thru things like cross-over fan fiction. But if I
were to go on a sailor moon mailing list and argue about the
characters based on, say, their appearances in Lemon Sherbet,
I don't think I'd get much serious attention.

The anime is an officially licensed interpretation of Ranma 1/2,
but it's my understanding that after the first season Takahashi
didn't have all that much input into the anime.

I wouldn't say that the anime doesn't matter to people's feelings
about Ranma 1/2; but if one is trying to present evidence
about the characters and their situation, I would fall
back on the author's original creation as authoritative.

The anime suffers from a certain amount of filler (as well as bad
drawing somewhere in the middle), and the animators seem to have some
objectives which have nothing to do with keeping the story
consistent (e.g. the addition of characters to the demon doll
OAV).
