No, I haven't been in an onsen; I read things like guides for tourists and
travel essays about Japan in addition to anime/manga as such.

(Though there _are_ some onsen's in anime/manga.)

I'm still at the stage where the travel and hotel bills for a trip to
Japan seem like a lot, though I might be able to afford it if I
stopped spending money on anime for 6 months ;)
