Well, mostly due to space limitations, owning a car it's not that
easy in Japan, also, they are very expensive according to my
sources. So teenagers just can't go crazy about driving when they
turn 16 like they do in North America.

I once saw a truck in an anime episode. If I'm right, Ranma, holding
Akane jumped atop a fence avoiding being hitted by it. 

Besides, what wuold the main characters drive? Say, hypotethically...

Genma & Soun: A rusty, beated up Datsun 710. (Owned by Soun)
The Tendo sisters: Honda Civic.
Ranma: A Mustang. Red.
Shampoo: Mazda Miata (A first generation one)
Mousse: Toyota T100 (Once he's gone trough that eye surgery)
Kodacchi & Kunou would be driven in a Lexus.
Built Ryouga tough: Land Rover Defender 90 (Fully loaded with
every navigational aid available)
Ukyou: Toyota Tacoma.
