Hotnit's lame ass rationilization:

The way I see it, Cloud kind of shows up at the train station in a haze
after his buddy Zack got wasted outside of Midgar.  Tifa finds him and
takes him back to seventh heaven right before the first avalanche reactor
sorti. He's just starting to get his head together when Tifa springs this
reactor mission on him.  Then enters Barret and the rest of Avalanche from
their underground HQ. Tifa walks over and says "this guy's an ex-soldier,
he can help us out..."  Naturally this doesn't appeal to Barret, since
we all know how he feels about the Shinra. Cloud and "the guy who's name
is Barret but Cloud doesn't know it yet" exchange some heated words before
Tifa breaks up the argument and convinces Barret to accept Cloud's help.
Cloud doesn't socialize with anyone until they finally reach the reactor.
And the rest is history....
