Hawaii is actually a popular Japanese vacation spot.  Not to mention
Hawaii was also a popular spot for immigration.  Sugar cane fields
provided work and money for agriculturally minded Japanese immigrants
looking to make a new life in the good ole U.S.  It was viewed as a
veritable land of milk and honey as well as a tropical paradise.  Of
course they weren't paid fairly, but after 30 or 40 years you could
save up enough loot and move on...  Hey, you'd even be surprised to see
how many people are of some Japanese descent on that island.  So you see,
Hawaii is a part of U.S. and Japanese history!  "Japan knows Hawaii!"
Ouch! My brain... Kodachi rules! Ah, that's better...
