I think the reason the OAVs were so much better art-
wise is that there was a bigger budget for better 
artists, but also because they didn't turn out an OAV 
every couple weeks.  The extra time probably helped a lot.

Too late on both the thanks and the reading. Actually, 
I didn't so much read it as skipped around to the 
parts that looked good.  The story had an unfortunate 
amount of mysticism, gore, and random Japanese 
vocabulary, so I didn't like it in particular, but at 
least Kodachi didn't go insane at the end.

Oh, and Kuno lived, too, although he probably never 
had children.  O_o  At least...I think he lived....
