But first, a word from someone who is NOT out sponsor..
DoCoMegumi noted:
>Yay! Today my mom finally let me go to a near-by martial arts supply store. I
>got a Chinese-style top exactly like Ranma's long sleeve one, except mine is
>black with white buttons.
O_O WHOA! Okay, I bought TWO exactly like what you're describing about
two weeks before AX98... Lessee, that would be June 2x, ACAX 98.
(Annum carnivale Anime Expo, or In the Year of Our Festival, AX)
Out of curiousity:
WHERE? I got mine in a little shop in Chinatown, NYC, NY, USA
HOW MUCH? $12.00 apiece for me.

We interrupt this message to annoy you, and make things generally
irritating.

DoCoMegumi again noted:
>Well, I'm happy to say that I'm very happy with Anime week on the Sci-Fi
>channel. Both Galaxy Express 999's were a lot better than I thought, and I
>really enjoyed them. And tonight is the night I'm really looking forward too,
>UY Movie 2:Beautiful Dreamer dubbed. Subtitled was excellent, and I want to
>see how they do in dub. I have heard it's pretty good from members of this
ML.

I also enjoyed the three nights of Anime Week I was able to watch,
mainly because Free Anime is Good. Obviously. IMO, UY2:Beautiful Dreamer
was the best of the lot, especially with the Twilight Zone-esque
ending.. I thought the dubbing in it was okay, not great, and the voice
of the little dream-demon was annoying as Apollo Smile's. And that
says a LOT.

>Now, all this week on Sci-Fi has been Viz releases (except UY, right?). Do
you
>think there is a chance that Sci-Fi, if they keep up Saturday Anime (it's on
>haitus for the summer unfortunately), they might play one of the Ranma
movies?
>Also, does anyone know the new line-up (if they have it yet) of Saturday
>Anime? I don't really mind Tenchi In Love and Venus Wars being played over
and
>over again, but I think it's time for change ^_^
Doubtful. As Arnold Kim noted, it'll be the same stuff unless they
actually decided to buy the rights to air new stuff. Also, there
won't probably be any Ranma movies because, as I've seen, they show 2-hour
segments, and each Ranma movie, without any cutting, is slightly less
than 1 hour. And you KNOW they'd cut the nudie scene in #2, as well
as possibly some of the other "special" scenes in #2..
More likely, just recycled anime, over and over and over and over and
over and over and over and over and over again.

> Sci-fi channel must have some kind of
>agenda to slowly depopularize anime in the US, by showing people the same
>shows over and over again until they can't stand it.

Also, remember that they first have to secure broadcast rights
for both the American distributor as well as the Japanese
publishing company. Then, they have to have a special copy of the
movie/series made from the 3/4" dubbed master for broadcasting.
(Those in the film/advertising industry know what I mean.)
At that point, they have to edit that tape to make it "suitable"
(i.e. cut and censored) for American broadcasting, and meanwhile
need to secure funding from advertisers, whose spots then have to
be laid into a final broadcast master which contains the lead-in
(Anime week opening sequence, etc.), actual movie, commercials,
credits, previews of "What's on next", and Anime Week trailer/credits.
And that COSTS MONEY! So, why spend lots of money on a bunch of dubious,
new anime when you can just recycle your old stuff, since the market
so far isn't huge.
Unfortunately, this is a self-perpetuating downward spiral. :(
So, write to the dumb <expletive deleted>, tell them to get some
new material.
