Depends on your tastes. I personally dislike DBZ, because it's in my
opinion a very one-dimensional series, especially the fighting system (the
one with the most power wins, generally), and I feel like the characters
aren't developed except in terms of their fighting skill. But that's probably
because I'm not much of an action or mecha anime person - I like deep
story and an impacting plot, and maybe a little comedy as well, and some
romance (I prefer comedy over serious, though Evangelion is on my top
five because of it's poignant story - not your regular mecha anime).

But don't let my opinion bias your judgement of DBZ. I just don't like it.
Others do.

Maison Ikkoku is a very good series, mostly romance, but with a little
comedy. The story unfolds very nicely and the dilemmas of Yusaku
Godai are very nicely done. Takahashi-sensei seems to have a lot of
"close calls" in terms of the romance in MI goes..^_-

If you like a little romance, a deep story and quite abit of slapstick gags,
I'd recommend MI. It ranks up there at around 6 on my list. ^_^
