It depends what you like.

DragonBall, seems to be based on the premise that supermen have problems
too ;) from the few bits I've seen of it... there's no reasonable limits on
what the powered up characters can do.

Maison Ikokku is a great series if you like romantic comedy, and it's in a
fairly realistic setting: no aliens, no magic, gravity usually works. It
also has a fairly satisfying ending, and it seems well rounded. Of course,
it's not a good time to get into the anime: it will take some time for Viz
to get though it commercially, but they've gotten far enough that fansubs
are pretty much out of distribution.

(I got "hooked" on a MI 15 episode marathon an an anime club just before
the anime started coming out from Viz, and the Viz subs are just, in the
last few months, getting past the point I've seen before in the anime.)

(I've gotten all the Japanese manga of Maison Ikkoku, and would recommend
that for people who can't wait years for the ending, even if you don't read
Japanese. Though Viz is doing a bit better on getting the manga out than
the anime.)

When I finally get a laserdisk player, getting the last couple of MI disks
is high on my wish list. But while I've got on the Kimagure Orange Road
laserdisk pre-order, I don't have a player yet.

Which reminds me: KOR is another good romantic comedy. I don't think anyone
is talking about translating the manga commercially, but it isn't real hard
to get the originals, and nearly complete fan-translations of the manga
exist.

Re: Rumiko Takahashi, for a quickie try "Fire Tripper" or "Mermaid
Forest"/"Mermaid Scar". (The latter are rather dark.)

Urusei Yatsura may be an acquired taste. I liked movie #2 "Beautiful
Dreamer" and OAV #1 Inaba the Dreammaker... I think you need to have read
enough of the manga to know the main characters, because these are fairly
far along in the continutity (such as there is).

Other purely comic anime of note, either one-shot or short series: "Cat
Girl Nuku","Project A-ko","Dragon Half".
