Although Ranma 1/2 is very attractive to girls, it is a shounen comic,
which makes Rumiko Takahashi one of the very few women to draw for a
boys comics. Chris Rijk has some of the few interviews with
Takahashi-sensei on his web page, http://www.wot-club.org.uk/RanmaFAQ/
(or reach it backwards by going to Inuyasha first):

The romance in Ranma 1/2 ends in comedy before it gets too serious---
and the battles and humor have made this one of the most popular series.
Shoujo comics feature very pretty guys and a lot of romance.

Another opinion:

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer a warm, friendly, and respectful
atmosphere when discussing anything, possibly because the benefits of
having most participants in a good mood far outweighs any pride in
having won or outmaneuvered others, referred to as opponents.

Some
things are worth fighting for, like one's life, but sometimes things
become blown out of proportion, like Soun's "demon head" reaction.

For many people, it is a wonderful experience to be able to speak one's
mind in a peaceful environment. Even if someone is wrong, corrections can
be made in a tactful manner, knowing that, in all likelihood, the other
person will not change their mind.

I can understand how one enjoys the glory of battle, the feeling of being
right, but I don't understand why one would seek new battlefields in
otherwise peaceful realms.

Just one very confused (semi-lurker---okay, I admit it. ^_^)
